The Future of Case at a Place from the Past
The Case Club of Silicon Valley met at a very appropriate museum for the location, The Computer History Museum, on Tuesday Nov. 12, 2008. 40 attendees viewed the museum’s exhibits, including the world’s oldest computer (over 200 years old), enjoyed dinner, and listened to two speakers. The first speaker was a surprise to many: Paul Buchheit ‘98 invented gmail. Once Google grew too large for his flavor, he left the company and became an angel investor in small start-ups in the Silicon Valley area. He remains passionate about investing in and contributing to small start ups. He is currently one of the master minds behind Friend Finder, a social application that allows friends to share articles of interest and comment on them. Don Feke, Vice Provost of Undergraduate Programs and Interim Chair of the Chemical Engineering Department brought everyone up to speed on the Strategic Plan of the University and the Case School of Engineering. Alumni asked many very pointed questions.

The event was held at Googleplex, the company headquarters for Google, Inc., and included a tour of the facilites prior to the event. Host Paul Franceus '85 was joined by fellow Google employees and alumni, Ben Gomes '90 and Ellen Lee '92. Ben is a bit of a legend at Google: he is the 48th employee of the company. Dean Norman tien introduced the evenings's speaker, Mehran Mehregany, director of the new Science & Technology Application Center planned in California. He answered thoughtful and probling questions regarding STAC and its projected success.
