2nd Annual CAA Larry Mattson '57 Metric Century Bike Ride

History

On June 8, 2007, Larry Mattson ’57 celebrated his 50th reunion from the Case Institute of Technology. Mattson’s reunion sparked an idea—a 2,800 mile ride back along the old route 66, which he traveled on his way to a new life in California as an engineer following graduation. Mattson, then 72, left Santa Monica, Calif., on April 1 and arrived in Cleveland on Memorial Day. About 50 alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends joined Mattson on Saturday, June 2, at the Maple Grove Picnic Shelter in the Rocky River Reservation Metroparks for the first annual “CAA Metric Century Ride” to Lake Erie. With about 52 days of actual riding, Mattson rode more than 50 miles a day atop a carbon fiber Trek road bike that weighs all of about 19 pounds.

To commemorate this monstrous feat the CAA decided to honor Larry’s ride in 2007 and make this an annual tradition.
